About

For ten years I was represented by Winchester Galleries in Victoria, BC. I have been selling privately through my Instagram (andrewgibbsfineart) since the gallery shut down a few years ago.

I graduated from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2000 and have shown at The Elisa Cristall Gallery in Vancouver and a variety of other galleries on the mainland and Gulf Islands before joining Winchester. My work has been included in collections across Canada, and The Keg Restaurants, Hy's Encore Steakhouse and Tsawwassen Springs/Talisman Homes are just some of my clients. Last year I was featured on Global News for a piece of art that I created in response to the Blue Jays' exciting run to the World Series Championship.

Artist statement

“I would describe my work as being contemporary impressionism, with elements of tonalism incorporated into the image. My work is observational but also emotional, and I feel that my strength as an artist is my ability to capture the emotive power of the west coast landscape. Colour is also a strength of mine and I enjoy using colour as a language to describe subtle emotions and currents of energy found in nature.”

“Like the Group of Seven and artists like Tom Thomson, my work is characterized by two related types of painting. In the summer months I like to work outside with my oils, often arriving early at a location to paint. I believe that there is a certain magic that occurs when painting outside: that something of the essence of the place is absorbed into the artist and filtered into the painting. The painting becomes the substance that is left behind, the thing that testifies to and resonates with the experience that took place between the artist and the location.”

“In the fall, winter and spring I teach art full time at a private high school in Victoria (since 2016), and so my practice shifts to my studio in North Saanich and, occasionally, to my classroom.”
